PKR and PAS slam Ooi
By SIRA HABIBU

PETALING JAYA: Jelutong MP Jeff Ooi came under fire for wanting to get rid of a PKR councillor on grounds that he was linked to Jemaah Islah Malaysia (JIM).

PAS Youth chief Nasrudin Hassan said Ooi had shown his prejudice by calling Penang municipal councillor Mohd Razali Abdullah a ‘religious extremist’.

“He has proven his ignorance as he is making sweeping statements without thinking rationally,” he said.

Ooi had said Mohd Razali should be removed because he had admitted to being a JIM member.

Ooi, who is Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s chief of staff, had said the state was setting a dangerous precedent by allowing an alleged religious extremist to infiltrate the local government.

“We regret such a stand taken by Ooi. He should be objective and open-minded to contradictory opinions,” said Nasrudin.

Kedah PKR chief Ahmad Kasim said Ooi had proven to be an ‘extremist’ himself as he had judged JIM without even understanding the meaning of Islah (change).

“Perhaps Ooi is confused between JIM (Jemaah Islah Malaysia) and JI (Jemaah Islamiah).

“I think JIM should explain to Ooi what the organisation is all about,” he said, adding that he agreed with Penang PKR chairman Datuk Zahrain Mohd Hashim that the issue should be addressed at the Pakatan Rakyat council meeting.

In Penang, state PAS had called for Ooi to be professional when handling his personal grouses with Mohd Razali.

“Ooi should leave it to the wisdom of the state Pakatan Rakyat leadership to decide, instead of openly attacking Razali, including making an issue of his link with Jemaah Islah and branding him a religious extremist,” said its state deputy commissioner I Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa.

Dr Mujahid, who is also Parit Buntar MP, said Ooi was undermining Pakatan in Penang by continuing to attack Razali and PAS was calling for a stop in the public tirade as it was generating unnecessary tension in the alliance.

Describing Ooi’s claims that Razali was an ‘extremist’ as utter nonsense, he said every Pakatan member must learn to tolerate each other’s differences.

“Razali was appointed by PKR because he is also an engineer by background.

“I am sure he is making decisions as a member of the council’s one-stop centre (OSC) committee based on his technical expertise,” he said, adding that people could get easily disillusioned if politicians harped on petty issues.
